The frigate was originally commissioned 1 October 1980, and was the 7th ship in the Oliver Hazard Perry class. It was named for Rear Adm. Samuel Eliot Morison, one of America's most distinguished naval historians, who wrote more than 40 books on naval history. The frigate was transferred to the Turkish Republic as TCG Gorkova (F-496).
