William David Halyburton, Jr. (02 August 1924 - 10 May 1945) was a native of Canton, N.C., and graduated New Hanover High School, Wilmington, N.C. His plans to
enter the ministry changed when he left Davidson College, Davidson, N.C., and joined the U.S. Naval Reserve on 04 August 1943. After basic training and Hospital Corps School, both at Bainbridge Md.,
he was advanced to PhM3. He then attended a number of other schools and was promoted to PhM2 on 01 August 1944. After combat training in California, he joined the 2nd Battalion, 5th Marines,
1st Marine Division, and on 14 December 1944 embarked aboard USS General M. M. Patrick, which was leaving for the invasion of Okinawa. On 10 May 1945, as his company attacked a
significant objective, he moved in the open to help the wounded. In order to protect a wounded patient, PhM2 Halyburton shielded the Marine with his own body despite the danger of incoming rounds.
He continued to minister aid until he himself was mortally wounded. For heroically sacrificing his life to save the lives of other Marines, he was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor. He was
laid to rest in the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific, Honolulu, Hi.
USS Halyburton (FFG 40) is the first ship named in his honor. The Halyburton Naval Hospital at Marine Corps Air Station, Cherry Point, N.C. was also named to honor him. |
