    Carr

6k Paul Henry Carr (13 February 1924 - 25 October 1944) was born on a farm near Webber Falls, Oklahoma and graduated from Checotah High School in May 1942. Joining the Navy on 27 May 1942, he married Goldie Lee Jamison in October 1943, before receiving orders to the USS Samuel B. Roberts (DE 413) in April 1944. During the Battle Off Samar on 25 October 1944, Carr was serving as gun captain of Roberts' Mount 52. After the gun had fired approximately 300 rounds the mount lost power ramming. After seven or eight more shots the air injection system was lost and soon a round cooked off before the breech could be completely shut, destroying the gun and killing most of the gun crew. GM3 Carr stayed at his station and although grievously injured repeatedly tried to load the last remaining shell into the destroyed gun by hand. He soon died of his injuries. GM3 Carr was awarded the Silver Star.

USS Carr (FFG 52) (1985-2013) was the first ship named in his honor.

The vessel was spotted by lookouts from the 6th Fleet command and control ship USS Mount Whitney (LCC 20). Both ships were heading for waters off the coast of Monrovia, Liberia to help commemorate the inauguration of newly elected President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, on 16 January. The small craft, with a crew of 6 men, had been at sea for 35 days and was without a working motor, food, or water. Within two hours, crew members dispatched from Carr had the vessel moving under it's own power and had replenished supplies with enough food and fuel to get the vessel back to land safely.
