DE- 20 USS LEHARDY
HISTORY
(Submitted By Contributor's)
Shown below is a clarification as to the number of Battle Stars
DE-20 USS LEHARDY received during WWII,
as submitted by Mr. Richard F. Dinsdale Sonarman 2/c former crew member.
Your page about the record of DE20
lists only two battle stars. My notice of
separation lists Asiatic Pacific 3 stars.
As member of the crew from the time
she was commissioned until it was
overhauled at Harbor Island in Seattle
two years later in 1945. We were at the
invasions Tarawa,Marshall, and Eniwetok.
At Tarawa, we were close in to the
beach dropping depth charges on a
Japanese sub which was later sunk by
a sister DE. At Eniwetok, We sailed
into the lagoon with many other ships in
our fleet while the islands around us
were held by the Japanese. We were
on anti sub duty between the two main
atolls the night before the Marines
landed losing about 600 men. We ended
up with shrapnel all over our deck from
caroms from our own warships. Hardly
any coconut trees were left standing
on the island.
I`m sure my shipmates would
appreciate your correction to three
battle stars.
Thank you!
Richard F. Dinsdale
Sonarman 2/c
