Entemedor (SS-340)

Radio Call Sign: November - Kilo - Golf - Foxtrot

Balao Class Submarine: Original name Chickwick, name changed on 24 September 1942. Laid down, 3 February 1944 at the Electric Boat Company, Groton, CT; Launched 17 December 1944; Commissioned USS Entemedor (SS-340) on 6 April 1945. Decommissioned on 10 December 1948 at Mare Island Naval Shipyard, Vallejo, CA and laid up in Pacific Reserve Fleet.
Re-commissioned on 24 October 1950. Sailed for New London, CT. on 2 January 1951. Entered Electric Boat Company yards on 31 January 1952 for extensive modernization under Guppy IIA program and received her Guppy bow and Electric Boat "sail" to house snorkel and mast equipment.
Placed in reserve commission on 28 February 1952 and back in active status on 17 October 1952. During overhaul at Philadelphia Naval Shipyard in March 1954, she underwent extensive electronics, sonar and machinery modernization.
Pursuant to the Security Assistance Program, Entemedor was transferred (leased) to the Republic of Turkey on 31 July 1972. Renamed/renumbered and Commissioned TCG Preveze (S-345) same day. On 1 August 1973, the ex-Entemedor was struck from the Naval Vessel Registry (NVR) and disposed of (cash sale) to the Republic of Turkey and the title transferred. TCG Preveze (S-345) continued to serve in the Turkish Submarine Forces until her Decommissioning on 20 March 1986. Final disposition and fate are unknown.

As built to the specifications: Displacement, Surfaced: 1,526 t., Submerged: 2,242 t.; Length 311' 9"; Beam 27' 3"; Draft 15' 3"; Speed, Surfaced 20.25 kts, Submerged 8.75 kts; Cruising Range, 11,000 miles surfaced at 10kts; Submerged Endurance, 48 hours at 2kts; Operating Depth, 400 ft; Complement 6 Officers, 60 Enlisted; Armament, ten 21" torpedo tubes, six forward, four aft, 24 torpedoes, one 5"/25 deck gun, one 40mm gun, one 20mm gun, two .50 cal. machine guns; Patrol Endurance 75 days; Propulsion, diesel-electric reduction gear with four main generator engines., General Motors diesel engines, HP 5400, Fuel Capacity 118,000, four General Electric motors, HP 2,740, two 126-cell main storage batteries, two propellers.
