Guppy II Conversion - Decommissioning


Tench Class Submarine: Laid down, 29 January 1945, at Portsmouth Navy Yard, Kittery, ME; Launched, 12 June 1945; Commissioned USS Pomodon (SS-486), 11 September 1945; Snorkel conversion, 25 October 1946 to 26 July 1947, at Mare Island Naval Shipyard, Vallejo, CA.; Guppy IIA conversion from January 1951 to May 1951, at Mare Island Naval Shipyard; On 21 February 1955, while recharging batteries in the San Francisco Naval Yard, a build-up of hydrogen gas caused an explosion and fire, damaging the submarine and killing five men. She was decommissioned for repairs on 1 April 1955 and recommissioned on 2 July 1955. Decommissioned and struck from the Naval Register, 1 August 1970; Final Disposition, Sold 28 December 1971 to Nicolai Joffe, Beverly Hills, CA for $ 70,631.00. Removed 26 January 1972 & scrapped by Southwest Recycling Co., San Pedro, CA.
