Note: This was the start of what would become standard practice throughout the Gato, Balao and Tench classes.
Boats built at Portsmouth Naval Shipyard to BuC&R/Portsmouth design plans (and those other yards that built to these plans [Mare Island Navy Yard, and Boston Navy Yard]) used Fairbanks Morse 9 or 10 cylinder 38D 8-1/8 OP diesels.
Boats built at Electric Boat Company to BuC&R/EB design plans (and those other yards that built to these plans [Manitowoc Shipbuilding Company and Cramp Shipyard]) used Cleveland Diesel (GM) 248 diesels then after SS-251 Cleveland Diesel (GM) 16-278A diesels.
This engine difference along with other construction differences marked the difference between an EB-boat and a Portsmouth-boat.  Both design sets were outstanding as was the workmanship at all the yards, but the differences did set up preferences amongst the sailors for one or the other type.
