Sangay Class Ammunition Ship
  • Laid down, 30 October 1941, as SS Cape Sable, a Maritime Commission type (C1-B) hull, under Maritime Commission contract (MC hull 225) at Pennsylvania Shipyards, Inc., Beaumont, TX.
  • Launched, 5 April 1942
  • Acquired by the Navy from the Maritime Commission, 25 November 1942
  • Commissioned, USS Sangay (AE-10), 25 March 1943, CDR. W. D. Ryan in command
  • During WWII USS Sangay was assigned to Asiatic-Pacific Theater and participated in the following campaigns:

    Asiatic-Pacific Campaigns
    Campaign and Dates Campaign and Dates
    Marshall Islands operation
    Occupation of Kwajalein and Majuro Atolls, 3 to 8 February 1944
    Western Caroline Islands operation
    Capture and occupation of southern Palau Islands, Peleliu, 6 September to 14 October 1944

  • Following World War II USS Sangay (AE-10) was assigned to Occupation service in the Far East from 8 October 1945 to 28 January 1946
  • Decommissioned, 20 July 1947, at Orange, TX.
  • Laid up in the Atlantic Reserve Fleet, Texas Group, Orange
  • Custody transferred to the Maritime Administration, 30 June 1960, for lay up in the National Defense Reserve Fleet; Beaumont, TX.
  • Struck from the Naval Register 1 July 1960
  • Final Disposition, sold for scrapping, 19 November 1980, by the Maritime Administration (MARAD), to Consolidated Andy, Corp., for $198,600
  • USS Sangay received two battle stars for World War II service
