  • Launched, 21 October 1861
  • Commissioned USS Kanawha, 21 January 1862, LT. John C. Febiger in command
  • Assigned to the Gulf Blockading Squadron at Mobile, AL. where on 10 April 1862 she captured schooners Southern Independence, Victoria, Charlotte, and Cuba; 21 April, R.C. Files; 29 April, British sloop Annie; 25 March 1863 schooner Clara; 1 May schooner Dart; 14 May, British brig Comet; 17 May schooner Hunter; 18 May, schooner Ripple; 29 November, schooner Albert
  • Reassigned in spring 1864 to the Texas coast to re-institute the blockade at Brownsville, TX. capturing or running aground several ships
  • USS Kanawha decommissioned, 5 July 1865, at New York
  • Final Disposition, sold 13 June 1866, fate unknown

    Kanawha 113k A 19th Century phototype by F. Gutekunst, Philadelphia, depicting USS Kanawha "cutting out a blockade runner from under the guns of Fort Morgan", at the mouth of Mobile Bay, AL. There is no record of Kanawha capturing a steam blockade runner as depicted here, though she took several prizes while enforcing the blockade of Mobile Bay.
