USS Shamokin (I)


Double-ender Sidewheel Gunboat:
  • Built during the Civil War at Chester, Pa., by Reaney, Son, and Archbold
  • Launched, date unknown
  • Delivered to the Philadelphia Navy Yard, Philadelphia, PA., 31 July 1865
  • Commissioned USS Shamokin, 17 October 1865, at Philadelphia Navy Yard, CDR. Pierce Crosby in command
  • Completed too late for service in the Civil War, Shamokin was assigned to the South Atlantic Squadron where she protected American citizens and interests along the coast of South America
  • Shamokin returned to the Washington, D.C. Navy Yard in 1868
  • Decommissioned and laid up at Washington, D.C. Navy Yard, 24 December 1868
  • Sold at Public Auction, 21 October 1869 to a Mr. T. Clyde
  • Final Disposition, fate unknown.
