Bienville Class Sidewheel Steamer:
  • Laid down around 14 September 1861 as a light-draft sidewheel river steamer, of yellow pine and white oak, at Bayou St. John, LA. by John Hughes & Co. and Acting Constructor S.D. Porter, CSN,
  • Launched, in January 1862
  • Completed and put into service as CSS Carondelet in March 1862, LT. W. Gwathney, CSN, in command
  • On 4 April CSS Carondelet, accompanied by CSS Oregon and CSS Pamlico, engaged the Federal gunboats USS New London, USS John P. Jackson and USS Hatteras at Pass Christian, MS. The Confederates were unable to prevent the landing of 1,200 Union men at the Pass and the destruction of the camp there.
  • Final Disposition, destroyed by her officers on Lake Pontchartrain just before the fall of New Orleans to escape capture by the Federals
