  • Built in 1862 at Brownsville, PA.
  • Purchased as SS Duchess at Cincinnati, OH., 22 December 1862
  • Commissioned USS Petrel, Volunteer LT. John Pearce in command
  • During the Civil War USS Petrel was assigned to the Mississippi Squadron
  • Petrel participated in the Yazoo River expedition against Haynes Bluff, 30 April to 1 May 1863
  • Cruised the Yazoo, Sunflower, Red, Black, Tensas and Ouachita Rivers looking for Confederate vessels and military stores
  • February 1864 participated in the Yazoo River expedition to support Sherman's expedition to Meridian
  • Participated in attacks on Yazoo City in early April 1864
  • Disabled and captured, 22 April 1864
  • Final Disposition, stripped of guns and stores and burned
