USS Erie (I)


Sloop of War:
  • Built by Thomas Kemp, Baltimore, MD
  • Launched, 3 November 1813
  • Commissioned USS Erie, 28 March 1814, CDR. C. G. Ridgeley in command
  • Assigned to the Mediterranean in 1815 for four years
  • Laid up at New York, 20 January 1820
  • Recommissioned in November 1823 for service in the Mediterranean until 1826
  • Based at Pensacola from 1827 to 1832
  • Placed in ordinary at Boston, 21 August 1832 to 24 June 1834
  • Assigned to the Brazil station in 1834
  • Placed in ordinary at Boston, 15 September 1837 to 4 February 1838
  • Reactivated and assigned to cruise the Atlantic coast
  • Reassigned to Pensacola to patrol the West Indies and Gulf of Mexico in July 1838
  • Rebuilt at Boston between July 1840 and February 1843, converted to an armed storeship
  • Assigned to the Pacific station returning to New York in June 1844
  • From New York Erie crossed the Atlantic to supply the African Squadron
  • Returning to the Pacific station, 18 November 1845, during the Mexican War Erie supplied the fleet in its operations at sea and in landings, participating in the occupation of Mazatlan, 11 November 1847
  • Recalled to the east coast Erie reached New York, 24 June 1848
  • Erie sailed for Africa and the Mediterranean, 15 September 1848, to deliver supplies to ships on station
  • Returned to New York, 11 July 1849, with two more voyages to the Mediterranean before being decommissioned and sold at New York, 26 November 1850
  • Final Disposition, fate unknown
