  • Built as the sidewheel steamer Great Western at Cincinnati, Ohio, in 1857
  • Purchased by the War Department 10 February 1862, assigned to the Army's Western Flotilla
  • Transferred to the Navy and placed in service, 30 September 1862. as Great Western
  • Great Western was used as an ordnance boat for the Navy on the western waters
  • Supported the combined operations at Vicksburg in 1862 and 1863
  • Assigned as receiving ship at Cairo, IL. in July 1864
  • Reassigned as receiving ship at Mound City, IL. in March 1865
  • Placed out of service and sold at auction to John Riley, 29 November3 1865
