  • Chartered by the Navy and commissioned USS General Grant, 20 July 1864, at Bridgeport, AL., Acting ENS. Joseph Watson in command
  • During the Civil War USS General Grant was assigned to patrol duty on the upper Tennessee River
    Destroyed 22 small boats off Port Deposit and Crow Island in October 1864
    Assisted in the taking of pontoon bridges at Decatur, AL.
    Participated in the bombardment of Guntersville, AL, 15 January 1865
    Decommissioned, 2 June 1865, and returned to the War Department
  • Final Disposition, lost by stranding in the ice at Plattsmouth, NE., 18 March 1866
