Sternwheel Steamer / Gunboat Tinclad # 7:
  • Built in 1862 as the wooden stern-wheel steamer New Era at Wellsville, OH.
  • Purchased by the Navy at Cincinnati, OH., 27 October 1862
  • Commissioned, 1 December 1862, at St. Louis, Missouri, Acting Master Frank W. F. Flanner in command
  • During the Civil War USS New Era served with the Mississippi Squadron and participated in the following actions:
    Arrived, 24 December 1862 off Columbus, KY. to support the Union army garrison there threatened by a large Confederate force threatening to disrupt union supply lines into Vicksburg
    Supported the capture of Fort Hindman on the White River in Arkansas in January 1863
    Operated near Island No. 10, inspecting river boats out of northern ports to prevent illegal trade with the Confederacy capturing and taking as prizes steamer W. A. Knapp, 4 February, steamers Rowena and White Cloud, 13 February, Curlew, 28 February, steamer Ruth 12 March
    USS New Era destroyed nine boats and barges, 16 June above Island No. 10 collected there for a Confederate attack on the island
    Supported the failed defensive effort to save Fort Pillow in April 1864, against the Confederate force that captured the fort
    Throughout the remainder of the war New Era operated on the upper Mississippi and tributaries protecting Union communications on the waterways
    Decommissioned, 28 June 1865, at Mound City, IL.
    Sold at auction at Mound City to W. S. Mepham 17 August 1865
