Civil War Medal

Sternwheel Steamer (Tinclad No.21):
  • Built in 1860 as the sternwheel steamer at Pittsburgh, PA.
  • Launched, date unknown
  • Acquired in 1861 by the Confederate government for use as a transport on the upper Tennessee River, commissioned as CSS Alfred Robb
  • Alfred Robb was captured 19 April 1862, at Florence, AL.
  • Taken to Cairo, IL. for fitting out
  • Never taken to a Federal court hearing admiralty cases, renamed Robb
  • Robb entered Federal service in June 1862
  • Robb's primary duties included transporting goods and patrolling on the Tennessee River
  • Placed out of service at Mound City, IL.,, 9 August 1865
  • Sold at public auction, 17 August 1865, to H. A. Smith, redocumented as Robb, 9 September 1865 and served on the Mississippi River system until 1873
  • Final Disposition, dismantled at Ironton, Ohio in late fall of 1873.

    Namesake
    Col. Alfred Robb, CSA, one of the founders of Stewart College, Clarksville, TN. He was a delegate to the Democratic National Conventions of 1860 at Charleston and Baltimore. He enlisted in the Confederate Army at Clarksville 29 November 1861, Co. A, 49th TN Infantry. He was elected LT. COL. of his regiment 26 December 1861. Robb was mortally wounded at Fort Donelson. 15 February 1862 and died two days later 17 February.
