USS Severn (I)


Contoocook Class Screw Sloop-of-War
  • Laid down in October 1864 as the wooden screw sloop of war Mosholu at New York Navy Yard
  • Launched, 22 December 1867
  • Renamed Severn, 15 May 1869
  • Commissioned, USS Severn, 27 August 1869, CDR. Reigart B. Lowry in command
  • Upon completion in December 1869, USS Severn served as the flagship of the North Atlantic Squadron under RADM. Charles H. Poor
  • In January 1871 Severn called at Key West, FL., before setting out to cruise among West Indies ports into the following year
  • In April, she investigated the alleged mistreatment of the United States consul at Santiago de Cuba, subsequently returning to Hampton Roads, VA., at the end of July
  • Departing Hampton Roads for Key West in December, Severn returned north to Boston Navy Yard and was decommissioned there, 31 December 1871
  • Following repairs, Severn was transferred to New London, Conn., in 1875
  • Returning to New York in 1877, Severn was sold, 2 March 1877, to John Roach as part of his compensation for repairs made to monitor USS Puritan and then broken up

    Severn - is a tidal estuary river 14 miles long, located in Anne Arundel County, Maryland.
