Civil War Medal

Sidewheel Steamer
  • Laid down in 1858, at Smith and Rodger, Govan, Middle Yard, Glasgow, Scotland
  • Launched, 4 December 1858
  • Sold in 1863 to unknown London buyer
  • Resold in 1864 to Maurice Grant, of London
  • Confederate blockade runner Hansa, an iron paddle wheel, two-stacked steamer and running mate of Don, both were blockade-runners operated and partly owned by the State of North Carolina and are generally considered to have been public vessels for all practical purposes.
  • Hansa made at least eleven successful round trips before she appears to have fouled her boilers by February 1864, if not earlier, and may have been retired to less hazardous service; many steamers ruined their tubes by burning turpentine soaked cotton from their cargo to get steam for flank speed in a dire extremity such as might be encountered any or every run through the blockade.
  • Final Disposition, fate unknown
