A native of Charlottesville, Virginia, Capt. Patrick Keller enlisted in the Navy in 1988 and attended MS “A” school. After “A” school, he entered into the submarine service and served aboard USS Permit (SSN 594) and USS Baton Rouge (SSN 689). He was honorably discharged in 1992 and attended San Diego Mesa College followed by the University of South Florida where he received a Bachelor of Arts in Geography. He received his commission through Officer Candidate School in Pensacola, Florida in December 1998.
At sea, his tours include electrical officer aboard USS Mount Vernon (LSD 39); training officer and assistant operations officer aboard USS Russell (DDG 59); chief engineering officer of MHC Crew Force aboard USS Cormorant (MHC 57), USS Raven (MHC 61), and USS Kingfisher (MHC 56); commanding officer of PC Crew Foxtrot aboard USS Hurricane (PC 3), USS Chinook (PC 9) and USS Thunderbolt (PC 12); executive officer of LCS Crew 212 aboard USS Coronado (LCS 4) and USS Jackson (LCS 6); and commanding officer aboard USS Jackson (LCS 6).
Ashore, he served on the staff of Commander, U.S. Naval Forces Pacific Fleet as the task force excel/lessons learned officer for the Pacific Fleet; on the staff of Navy Personnel Command Surface Warfare (PERS-41) as the amphibious ships/staffs, MESF, RIVRONs and Military Sealift Commands placement officer; at CNE-CNA-C6F Headquarters as deputy director, future operations, executive assistant to the C6F Commander, deputy chief of staff/commanding officer of U.S. 6th Fleet and as C6F fleet scheduler; and most recently as chief staff officer, Littoral Combat Ship Squadron ONE
Keller also volunteered for the AFPAK Hands program, where he studied the Dari language and completed two deployments to Afghanistan. His first 12-month deployment was as the advisor to the Afghan commander for detainee operations, Combined Joint Inter-Agency Task Force-435. For his second 10-month deployment, Keller was assigned to Combined Joint Special Operations Task Force-Afghanistan as the district augmentation team leader for both Khakrez and Ghorak districts in Kandahar Province. Between his two AFPAK Hands deployments, Keller served as an Afghanistan/Pakistan Action Officer at CENTCOM J3-P.
His current assignment is Commanding Officer-Gold Crew, USS Miguel Keith (ESB 5).
Keller’s personal awards include the Legion of Merit, Bronze Star Medal, Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Meritorious Service Medal (two awards), Joint Service Commendation Medal, Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal (four awards), Joint Service Achievement Medal, Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal (four awards), Combat Action Ribbon, Good Conduct Medal and various campaign and service ribbons.
