Inshore Fire Suppot Ship (LFR) ex (IFS)
Index

The IFS, Inshore Fire Support Ship, and the LSM(R), Landing Ship Medium Rocket, were designed to support amphibious landings by providing close-in fire support using their primary battery of rocket launchers. LSM(R)s still remaining in the Navy inventory on 1 January 1969 were reclassified as LFRs. By this time the redesignation was basically for paper work purposes as the class had been decommissioned or was about to be decommissioned.
