USS America (LHA-6)


CAPT. Robert A. Hall Jr. USN

A native of Billerica, Mass., Captain Hall graduated from the Massachusetts Maritime Academy in 1984 with a bachelor’s degree in marine transportation and a U.S. Coast Guard Unlimited Third Mates License. As a merchant mariner, he shipped out commercially on a variety of vessels, including voyages in the Gulf of Mexico, North Sea, Arabian Gulf and Indian Ocean. Captain Hall received his naval commissioning from Officer Candidate School in 1989.

Afloat, Captain Hall most recently served as commanding officer of USS Porter (DDG 78) from December 2006 to June 2008. During his command, Porter earned the prestigious Battle “E” award for exceptional battle readiness and completed a highly successful forward deployment to the Central Command (CENTCOM) Theater of Operation, conducting anti-piracy operations off the Horn of Africa. Previous sea duties include: executive officer of USS Nicholas (FFG 47) from December 2001 to May 2003; pre-commissioning chief engineer on board USS Donald Cook (DDG 75) from November 1997 to February 2000; and chief engineer aboard USS Peterson (DD 969) from October 1995 to August 1997. Captain Hall began his Navy career as the damage control assistance and auxiliaries officer on board USS John Hancock (DD 981) from October 1989 to December 1992.

Ashore, he last served as the executive assistance (EA) to the Deputy Chief of Staff for Global Force Management, Joint Operations, Plans, Policy and Training (N3N5N7) at U.S. Fleet Forces Command (USFFC). Other shore tours include: Lead Maritime Homeland Defense planner at USFFC; National Military Command Center (NMCC) Systems Operations Branch Chief in the Operations Directorate (J-3) on the Joint Staff; and naval weapons program analyst on the OPNAV Staff in Washington, D.C. Captain Hall has a master’s degree in mechanical engineering from the Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey, Calif., and a master’s degree in national resource strategy from the Industrial College of the Armed Forces in Washington, D.C.

Captain Hall is currently the commanding officer of USS America (LHA 6). His personal awards include the Legion of Merit, Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Navy Meritorious Service Medal (three awards), Navy Commendation Medal (two awards), Navy Achievement Medal (two awards) and various unit citations.
