CAPT. Gary Boardman

Captain Gary Boardman, a native of Fort Lauderdale, Florida, is a 1985 graduate of the United States Merchant Marine Academy where he received his commission in the Naval Reserve, a Bachelor of Science Degree in Nautical Science, and a U.S. Coast Guard license as Third Mate, Unlimited Tonnage-Any Oceans.

Upon commissioning, Captain Boardman was assigned to the USS FREDERICK (LST 1184) in San Diego, California where he served in multiple billets to include Main Propulsion Assistant, Navigator and Chief Engineer.

In 1989, he reported to the Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey California and earned a Masters Degree in Transportation Management.

Upon completion of Department Head School in 1991, he reported to USS GUNSTON HALL (LSD 44) in Little Creek, Virginia, assuming duties as Chief Engineer. Following this assignment, he reported to USCINCLANTFLT’s Propulsion Examining Board (PEB), as a Diesel and Steam space examiner.

In 1994, he reported to USS NASSAU (LHA 4) in Norfolk, Virginia for an extended Post-Department Head tour as the Damage Control Assistant during which the ship completed two deployments to include a Non-Combatant Evacuation of Albania, (Operation SILVER WAKE), as well as Operation GUARDIAN RETRIEVAL off the coast of Zaire.

Following his 1998 graduation from the U.S. Marine Corps Command and Staff College, he assumed duties as Executive Officer of USS CARTER HALL (LSD 50) completing a UNITAS/Western Africa deployment.

In 2000, he reported to the Pentagon, assigned to OPNAV (N85) Expeditionary Warfare, as the Resource/ Requirements Officer for Future Amphibious ships (LPD 17, LHD’s and LHA Replacement).

He assumed Command of USS ASHLAND (LSD 48) in 2003, and deployed to the Arabian Gulf in support Operation IRAQI FREEDOM (OIF) and Operation ENDURING FREEDOM (OEF). In 2005, he assumed duties as Executive Officer of USS NASSAU (LHA 4) which also deployed to the Arabian Gulf in support of OIF/OEF.

Captain Boardman’s Joint Duty assignment was with US Joint Forces Command, Norfolk, Virginia. He served as Chief of the Joint Warfighting Center’s (J7) Exercise Division from 2007 through 2009.

In 2009, Captain Boardman was detailed to President, Board of Inspection and Survey (INSURV) as a senior inspector. Captain Boardman was USS WASP’s Executive Officer prior to assuming command in December 2011.
