Captain Darrell Canady, USN

CAPT Canady was born and raised in North Carolina. He attended North Carolina State University where he earned a B.S. degree in Electrical Engineering in 1994. Following college he was commissioned via Officer Candidate School in Pensacola, Florida. Upon completion of the nuclear power training pipeline, his first tour of duty was aboard USS JOHN C. STENNIS (CVN 74), where he served as Machinery Division Officer and later, as the Reactor Training Division Officer.

In October 2002, CAPT Canady reported to USS CARR (FFG 52) and served as Combat Systems Officer, deploying to the Arabian Gulf for the beginning of Operation Enduring Freedom. In January 2004, CAPT Canady reported to USS ENTERPRISE (CVN 65) where he served two years as the Forward Station Officer.

In June 2006, CAPT Canady reported to USS STEPHEN W. GROVES (FFG 29) as the Executive Officer. During his two-year tour USS STEPHEN W. GROVES deployed to the Eastern Pacific where he conducted counter narco-terrorism operations. CAPT Canady served as Commanding Officer in USS KLAKRING (FFG 42) from February 2011 to December 2012. Under his Command USS KLAKRING earned the Battle Efficiency Award for 2011 and completed his final deployment, conducting FIRESCOUT ISR operations in the 5th and 6th Fleet areas of operation.

In CAPT Canady’s last sea tour prior to reporting to USS IWO JIMA (LHD 7), he served as Reactor Officer in USS NIMITZ (CVN 68) from May 2013 to August 2015. During his tour NIMITZ completed an eight-month deployment, initial carrier testing of the F-35, a change of homeport from Everett to Bremerton, WA, and six months of a sixteen-month EPIA.

CAPT Canady’s tours ashore include instructor duty at Naval Nuclear Power Training Command where he taught Aspects of Reactor Plant Operations, student at the Naval War College in Newport, RI where he earned his M.A. in National Security and Strategic Studies, and as the Chief Staff Officer in Destroyer Squadron FIFTY, forward deployed in Bahrain. Most recently CAPT Canady served as Special Assistant to the Director of Naval Reactors for CVN Operations.
