USS Iwo Jima (LHD-7)


Captain David Loo, USN

Captain Loo is a native of New York and was commissioned through the United States Naval Academy in 1996, where he was conferred a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering. He has earned a Master of Arts in Diplomacy from Norwich University and a Master of Business Administration from the University of North Carolina, Kenan-Flagler Business School.

Captain Loo is designated a Naval Aviator and has served in multiple fleet assignments. His initial assignment was with the "Warlords" of HSL-51 where he deployed onboard USS Gary (FFG 51), USS Vandegrift (FFG 48) and USS Cowpens (CG 63) in support of Operation Southern Watch, Operation Noble Eagle, and Operation Enduring Freedom. He served aboard the USS IWO JIMA (LHD 7), as the Assistant Air Officer supporting Joint Task Force Katrina/Rita and the Non-Combatant Evacuation of Americans from Lebanon. He has served with the "Vipers" of HSL-48, as the Detachment SIX Officer in Charge onboard USS Winston S Churchill (DDG 81) supporting Operation Iraqi Freedom and as the Squadron Maintenance Officer. Additionally, aboard the USS JOHN C. STENNIS (CVN 74), as the Navigator, and received the John C. Stennis Straight Furrow Award for Leadership.

Ashore, he has served with the "Airwolves" of HSL-40, as an Instructor Pilot and Quality Assurance Officer, and was named the Airwolves Maintenance Officer of the Year. He has been assigned to the Joint Staff, where he served as a Joint Strategic Planner for Joint Concept Development Experimentation and the Executive Assistant to the Vice Director for Joint Force Development. He has also been assigned to the Navy Staff, where he served as the Deputy Director for Joint and Navy Urgent Requirements and the Executive Assistant to the Director, Integrated Warfare.

In command, he served as the Commanding Officer of the "Warlords" of HSM-51, and the command earned the Golden Wrench and Battle "E" awards for maintenance and operational excellence. Additionally, as the Commanding Officer of the “Airwolves” of HSM-40 where the command earned the Ellyson Award for production excellence.

Captain Loo has accumulated over 2700 flight hours in numerous aircraft and is designated a Joint Qualified Officer. He has been awarded the Legion of Merit, Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Meritorious Service Medal (three awards), and other personal awards, unit commendations, and service campaign awards.
