Commanding Officer, USS San Antonio (LPD-17)

CAPT Shane T. Marchesi was born in New Rochelle, NY. He graduated from the United States Naval Academy in 1998 with a Bachelor of Science in Ocean Engineering and was designated a Naval Aviator in 2000.

He reported in May 2001 to VFA-82, at MCAS Beaufort, SC where he deployed twice, first in September 2001 in support of Operation ENDURING FREEDOM on USS Theodore Roosevelt (CVN 71) and in 2003 in support of Operation IRAQI FREEDOM on USS Enterprise (CVN 65). In 2007, CAPT Marchesi served as the Training Officer for the Sidewinders of VFA-86 and deployed to CENTCOM on USS Enterprise. In September 2009, CAPT Marchesi reported to the Golden Warriors of VFA-87 where he served as a Department Head. While attached, he completed two combat deployments with CVW-8, deploying on USS Theodore Roosevelt and USS George H. W. Bush (CVN 77). Following a joint tour, CAPT Marchesi returned in 2015 to the VFA-87 Golden Warriors as the Executive Officer and assumed Command in November 2016. As the Commanding Officer, he deployed on USS George H. W. Bush in support of Operation INHERENT RESOLVE and in 2017 the command was awarded the Battle Efficiency Award for east coast F/A-18 squadrons. In July 2019 CAPT Marchesi transferred to the Navy Nuclear Power Training Command. He completed the nuclear power pipeline in 2021, checked in as the Executive Officer of USS Harry S. Truman (CVN 75) on April 1, 2021, and deployed during the Russian invasion of Ukraine to the SIXTH Fleet to support NATO and deterrence efforts in the region. CAPT Marchesi assumed command of USS San Antonio (LPD 17) in May 2023.

Captain Marchesi’s shore tours include the Naval Strike and Air Warfare Center as a TOPGUN instructor, the Naval War College, the Joint Staff, and the Navy Personnel Command. As a TOPGUN Tactics Instructor from 2004-2007, he was the United States Navy’s Air-to-Ground Employment Subject Matter Expert (SME). He attended the Naval War College in 2011 where he attained a Master of Arts in National Security and Strategic Studies, graduating with Highest Distinction. Following his time in Newport, he served on the Joint Staff as an Observer/Trainer in the J7 from 2012-2104. His last shore tour was at the Navy Personnel Command in 2018 where he served as the Commander TACAIR Detailer.

Captain Marchesi has over 3,700 flight hours, 800 arrested landings, and 129 combat missions. His personal decorations include an Individual Air Medal with combat V, Strike Flight Air Medal (eight), Meritorious Service Medal (three), Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Navy Commendation Medal (four, one w/V), Navy Achievement Medal (two), and various campaign and service awards.
