USS New Orleans (LPD-18)



CAPT. Brian T. Schrum, USN

Captain Brian “Mush” Schrum is a native of Fond du Lac, Wisconsin. He graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy in May 1996 with a Bachelor of Science in Political Science. He holds a Master of Science degree in Aviation Systems from the University of Tennessee and is a graduate of the Navy’s Nuclear Power Program.

Captain Schrum was designated a Naval Aviator in June 1999 and completed F/A-18C Fleet Replacement Squadron training with VFA-125 at NAS Lemoore, CA. CAPT Schrum’s career includes operational tours with Strike Fighter Squadron (VFA) 83 at NAS Oceana; VFA-34 at NAS Oceana; as Executive Officer and Commanding Officer of VFA-113 at NAS Lemoore; and as the Executive Officer of USS CARL VINSON.

Ashore, he completed the JPME I curriculum at the U.S. Army Command and General Staff College in Fort Leavenworth, KS; graduated from U.S. Naval Test Pilot School in Class 125; served as Ordnance Support and Carrier Suitability Project Officer for Air Test and Evaluation Squadron (VX) 23 in Patuxent River, MD; and was a Staff Action Officer at U.S. Special Operations Command at MacDill AFB, FL assigned to the Force Structure, Requirements, Resources and Strategic Assessment (J8) Directorate.

His decorations include the Defense Meritorious Service Medal, two Meritorious Service Medals, three Strike Flight Air Medals, Joint Service Achievement Medal, two Navy Commendation Medals, Navy Achievement Medal, and various campaign and unit level awards to include two Battle Efficiency Awards. He has accumulated over 2,650 flight hours in 21 different fixed and rotary wing aircraft and more than 670 carrier arrested landings.
