USS New York (LPD-21)


CAPT. Kenneth Coleman

Captain Ken Coleman is a Political Science and History major, he graduated from the State University of New York at Binghamton then received his commission from Officer Candidate School in October 1990.

He has served at sea aboard USS CLIFTON SPRAGUE (FFG 16) as Main Propulsion Assistant and Electronics Material Officer; USS MONTEREY (CG 61) as Navigator; USS JOHN PAUL JONES (DDG 53) as Chief Engineer; and USS PRINCETON (CG 59) as Executive Officer. He also served as Chief Staff Officer for Amphibious Squadron SEVEN completing a Humanitarian Assistance deployment in USNS MERCY (T-AH 19); and as Operations Officer (N3) for Carrier Strike Group ONE deploying to the Western Pacific/Arabian Gulf in USS CARL VINSON (CVN 70).

Captain Coleman commanded USS SQUALL (PC 7) from February of 2001 through May 2002 where he completed a counter-narcotics deployment to the Caribbean and Eastern Pacific followed by surge Homeland Defense patrols in response to the September 11th attacks. He was the commissioning Executive Officer for USS INDEPENDENCE (LCS 2) and fleeted-up to command INDEPENDENCE Blue Crew from April 2010 through October 2011 conducting critical Mine Warfare Mission Package testing.

He served ashore at NROTC Unit, New York Maritime College where he earned a Master of Arts in American History from Fordham University. He also served two tours on the staff of Commander Naval Surface Forces, U.S. Pacific Fleet, first as Engineering and Damage Control Training Officer (N71) and later as LCS Requirements Officer (N8B).

His personal decorations include the Meritorious Service Medal (7), Navy Commendation Medal (7) and the Navy Achievement Medal (2). He was recognized as an Atlantic Fleet Shiphandler of the Year for 1995 and received the Navy League Leadership Award from Department Head School in 1998. Captain Coleman reported as Executive Officer for USS NEW YORK (LPD 21) in February 2014. May 2015 he took command of this ship.
