USS San Diego (LPD-22)


CAPT. Peter M. Collins, USN

A native of Portland, Oregon, Captain Pete Collins graduated with a bachelor of science in Engineering from the University of Washington, and earned a Masters of Arts in Organizational Management from the George Washington University.

Prior to his present assignment as Executive Officer of USS San Diego, Collins’ was assigned as the Integration and Analysis Section Lead for the Director of Navy Assessments, OPNAV N81. He commanded Helicopter Maritime Strike Squadron 75, the Wolf Pack, which deployed as part of CVW-11 onboard USS Nimitz, USS Princeton, USS Stockdale, USS William P. Lawrence, and USS Shoup. For the period he commanded, the Wolf Pack was awarded the Battle “E”, Medical “M”, Arnold J. Isbell ASW Excellence Award, Golden Wrench, Golden Anchor, and the Secretary of Defense Phoenix Award for superior maintenance.

He has also deployed onboard USS Curts (FFG-38) as OIC of an SH-60B detachment, USS Belleau Wood (LHA-3) as Handler and Flight Deck Officer, USS John Young (DD-973) as air ops, and USS Ford (FFG-54). Collins has flown and instructed in the MH-60R and SH-60B while serving as Executive Officer and Training Officer at HSM-41, the West coast MH-60R and SH-60B fleet replacement squadron, HSL-49 Maintenance Officer, and HSL-45 NATOPS and assistant Operations Officer.

Ashore and Staff assignments also include the Joint Staff, Current Operations Directorate, J34 Homeland Defense and Anti-Terrorism Force Protection Division, and selection to the inaugural Navy Washington Internship Program which included brief tours in OPNAV N88 Director Air Warfare, Joint Staff Plans and Policies Directorate Russia, Ukraine, Eurasia Division, and the Office of Naval Research Fleet Project Applications.

He served as Executive Officer of the USS SAN DIEGO (LPD-22) until he took command on February 2nd, 2017.

Collins’ Awards include the Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Meritorious Service Medal, Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal (three awards), Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal and various unit and campaign awards.
