USS Arlington (LPD-24)


Commander Gregory E. Baker, USN

Commander Greg Baker was born in Charleston, SC. He enlisted in the Navy in 1984 as a Cryptologic Technician, Communications. Upon selection for the Enlisted Commissioning Program he attended Maine Maritime Academy where he graduated and received his commission.

Upon commissioning, his first tour of duty was aboard USS ANCHORAGE (LSD 36) where he served as First Division Officer and Main Propulsion Officer. In July 1998, he reported to USS ENTERPRISE (CVN 65) as the Assistant First Lieutenant.

In March 2003, he reported aboard USS HARPERS FERRY (LSD 49) as Chief Engineer where he deployed in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom. In 2005, he reported to PHIBRON ELEVEN as the N4 (Maintenance and Material) where he participated in humanitarian efforts throughout the Pacific area of operations.

He served as Executive Officer aboard USS SAN ANTONIO (LPD 17) where he deployed to the FIFTH and SIXTH Fleet AOR.

He obtained a Masters of Science Degree in National Security and Strategic Studies from the Naval War College.

CDR Baker's tours ashore include COMPACFLT where he served as the Current Operations Expeditionary Officer. Subsequently, he served in OPNAV N85, working on amphibious ship replacement and LSD recapitalization.

He served in Baghdad during a year-long individual augmentation to Iraq where he worked in the J5 Strategy section of the US Forces - Iraq staff and the Pol-Mil section of the Embassy.

CDR Baker's awards include the Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Meritorious Service Medal, Joint Service Achievement Medal, Navy Commendation Medal Navy Achievement Medal and various unit and service awards.
