USS Somerset (LPD-25)


CAPT. Darren W. Glaser, USN

Captain Darren Glaser is a native of Arlington Heights, Illinois. He graduated from the University of Kansas and was commissioned through Naval ROTC in January 1993.

Sea tours include USS NASSAU (LHA 4), USS SHILOH (CG 67), USS FITZGERALD (DDG 62), and USS MILIUS (DDG 69) as Executive Officer. He was the Commanding Officer of USS McCLUSKY (FFG 41). In October 2015, he reported to USS SOMERSET (LPD 25) to serve as the Executive Officer. In June 2016, CAPT Glaser assumed command of USS SOMERSET.

Shore tours include Fleet Combat Training Center, Pacific as the Cruise Missile Branch Head and Senior Instructor for Tomahawk Watch Officer, Cruise Missile Command Course, and C4I System Engineering curriculums. He served at Surface Warfare Officers School Command as the Executive Director of Fleet Training (N72), responsible for both the Division Officers Course and Maritime/Navigation curriculum.

Following his afloat Executive Officer tour on USS MILIUS, he earned his master's degree in National Security and Strategic Studies from the Naval War College in Newport, RI. Captain Glaser served a one year, joint tour within the Multi-National Security Transition Command–Iraq.

CAPT Glaser served as a Military Assistant to the Under Secretary of Defense for Personnel and Readiness. His last assignment was to the Chief of Naval Operations CNO) Staff as a dual Branch Head for both Destroyer Construction and for Future Ships Programs within OPNAV N96, Surface Warfare.

Personal awards include the Defense Superior Service Medal, Bronze Star Medal, Meritorious Service Medal (with two stars), Joint Service Commendation Medal, Navy Commendation Medal (with three gold stars), Navy Achievement Medal (with two gold stars), various unit awards and service ribbons.
