USS Somerset (LPD-25)


CDR. Cole Hayes, USN
PCU Commanding Officer

Commander Cole Hayes is a 1990 graduate of the University of Colorado, Boulder where he earned a Bachelor of Arts in English Literature and was a three-year letterman in football. After college graduation, he enlisted in the Navy and, upon completing Fire Controlman "C" School, reported to USS CHANDLER (DDG 996) from which he departed to attended Officer Candidate School in Pensacola, Florida.

Upon receiving his commission, he reported to USS COMSTOCK (LSD 45). Subsequent sea tours included Navigator in USS INGRAHAM (FFG 61), Engineer Officer in USS TORTUGA (LSD 46), Commanding Officer in USS CHINOOK (PC 9), Executive Officer in USS COMSTOCK (LSD 45) and Commanding Officer in USS PONCE (LPD 15). Ashore, Commander Hayes served as Flag Secretary in Amphibious Group TWO, Post-Department Head Detailer in PERS 41 at the Naval Personnel Command, Commanding Officer in PCU SOMERSET (LPD 25) and Statistics and Allocation Branch Head in PERS 45 at the Naval Personnel Command.

CDR Hayes graduated from the Naval War College and holds a Master of Arts in Strategic Studies and National Defense.

Among his decorations are the Bronze Star, Meritorious Service Medal(3), Joint Commendation Medal, Navy Commendation Medal(5), Combat Action Ribbon, and various other unit and service awards.
