USS Fort Lauderdale (LPD-28)

Commanding Officer

Captain McCarthy is a native of Templeton, Massachusetts, and a graduate of Bridgewater State College, Bridgewater, Massachusetts. He enlisted in the Navy in 1996, and entered the Surface Warfare community upon receiving his commission through Navy Officer Candidate School in 1998.

His Division Officer tours were on USS BRISCOE (DD 977) as Damage Control Assistant, and USS ARLEIGH BURKE (DDG 51) as Navigator. He completed his Department Head tours as the Operations Officer first on USS HALSEY (DDG 97), and then on the Staff of Commander, Destroyer Squadron SEVEN. Additionally, during Operation Enduring Freedom, he volunteered for assignment in Afghanistan as the Operations Officer for Task Force Biometrics. He completed his Executive Officer and Commanding Officer tours on USS RUSSELL (DDG 59), and is currently serving as Commanding Officer on USS FORT LAUDERDALE (LPD 28) as of July 2023.

He is a graduate of the Naval Postgraduate School, Monterey, California, where he received a Master of Business Administration in Defense Financial Management. This led to assignment as the Surface Navy Budget Analyst in the Office of the Assistant Secretary of the Navy, Financial Management and Comptroller (FMB). His subsequent Financial Management assignments include Financial Analyst for the Surface Warfare Financial Branch (OPNAV N96), and Surface Warfare Section Head for the Resourcing Branch of the Programming Division (OPNAV N80) where he also supported the Deputy Director for Surface Warfare (OPNAV N96). Most recently he served as the Naval Operations Analyst in the Naval Forces Division of the Office of the Secretary of Defense, Office of Cost Assessment and Program Evaluation (OSD CAPE).

His awards include the Defense Superior Service Medal, Legion of Merit, Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Meritorious Service Medal, Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal (four awards), Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal (two awards), and various unit and campaign awards.
