LPDs perform the mission of amphibious transports, amphibious cargo ships and amphibious dock landing ships. LPDs are amphibious command and control platforms that integrate the latest in shipbuilding and warfare technologies. LaSalle (LPD-3) and Coronado (LPD-11) were converted to Miscellaneous Command Ships (AGF). The newest class of LPDs are the San Antonio class (LPD-17). The navy currently plans to build twelve of these new ships.
