Memorabilia

Submitted by Robert M. Cieri
Iwo Jima

Autographed copy of Joe Rosenthal's Pulitzer Prize-winning photograph of the second flag raising atop Mount Suribachi on the island of Iwo Jima on 23 February 1945. This was the most famous photo of World War II. There are six Flag Raisers in the photograph. Four in the front line and two in back. The front four are (left to right) Ira Hayes, Franklin Sousley, John Bradley and Harlon Block. The back two are Michael Strank (behind Sousley) and Rene Gagnon (behind Bradley). All were Marines, except Pharmacist's Mate 2nd Class John H. Bradley, USN.
