Designed to support the Marine vertical envelopment concept, LPHs carried an assault force of personnel, combat supplies, equipment and transport helicopters. The Iwo Jima Class was the first class of helicopter carriers designed from the keel up, the ships are designed in a similar manner to conventional carriers with flight and hanger deck facilities. Two edge deck elevators provided access between the two decks.
