USS Comstock (LSD-45)


CDR. Nathan W. Hornback USN

Commander Nathan W. Hornback, a native of Bourbonnais, IL, was commissioned through Officer Candidate School.

CDR Hornback’s first duty station was USS DULUTH (LPD 6), where he served as Electrical Officer, Auxiliaries Officer, Main Propulsion Officer and ship’s Navigator. Additionally while assigned to USS DULUTH, CDR Hornback qualified as Steam Engineering Officer of the Watch, participated in RIMPAC-2002, and deployed in support of Operations ENDURING FREEDOM, and IRAQI FREEDOM. Subsequent sea assignments include Chief Engineer in USS VANDEGRIFT (FFG 48) where he qualified as Gas Turbine Engineering Officer of the Watch, and deployed in support of Joint Task Force 515 providing assistance to the Armed Forces of the Philippines. He also served as Future Operations Officer to Commander Destroyer Squadron 23 and deployed with NIMITZ Carrier Strike Group in support of Operation IRAQI FREEDOM where he conducted disembarked operations as Operations Officer to Commander Task Force Iraqi Maritime aboard Al Basrah Oil Terminal, Iraq.

Ashore he was assigned as Flag Aide to Deputy Commander U.S. Fleet Forces Com-mand, as a Strategic Planner in Integrated Assessments Branch, Naval Warfare Inte-gration Group (OPNAV N00X), as Deputy Executive Assistant to Deputy Chief of Naval Operations, Warfare Systems (OPNAV N9) and as a joint Future Operations Planner in U.S. Special Operations Command. Most recently he was assigned as Executive Officer USS COMSTOCK (LSD 45).

CDR Hornback holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology / Marine Biology from Florida Institute of Technology and a Master of Science degree in Systems Engineering and Analysis from the Naval Postgraduate School.

His personal awards include Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Meritorious Service Medal, Joint Service Commendation Medal, Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal, Joint Service Achievement Medal, Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal, and various unit and service awards.
