This Summary of the Deck Log of the USS LCI (L) 750 was compiled in memory of the fine crew who sailed this rugged little vessel through the elements to the enemy’s shores and returned her home. To the crew, the ship and the Americans who designed and built her, "Well Done".

Herein is a summary of daily log entries taken from the Deck Log of the USS LCI (L) 750 at the National Archives in Adelphi, Maryland. All notations in Italics are personal observations of B. L. Pettit, member of the crew.

13 March 1944 - Keel for USS LCI (L) 750 laid at Commercial Iron Works, Portland Oregon.

5 April, 1944 - Ship launched.

17 April 1944 - Ship Commissioned with Lt. (jg) S.A R. White, USNR as Commanding Officer. The following officers reported for duty as assigned.

21 April 1944 - John J. Mchugh, SC 3/c reported aboard from liberty having been AOL 2 hours and 16 minutes. Took on 16,747 gallons of fuel. Underwent degaussing of ship.

22 April 1944 - Field day. Ships company cleaning ship and securing gear for sea. Captain’s Mast held in case of John J. Mchugh, SC 3/c. Found guilty of being AOL. Restricted from 5 liberties.

23 April 1944 - Underwent compass compensation exercise.

25 April 1944 - Underway to Astoria, Oregon.

25 April 1944 - Arrived Astoria, Oregon.

26 April 1944 - Underway for San Diego, Calif.

29 April 1944 - Colors displayed at half mast in reverence of death of Frank Knox, Sec. Nav.

30 April 1944 - Arrived San Diego. Moored South Quay Wall. Daily beaching practice with USMC and drills around San Diego.

3 May 1944 - Beaching exercises. While withdrawing from beach anchor fouled in 3 inch telephone cable. Cable crossing not marked. Wind forced port bow against USCG float causing damage. Brake band on anchor winch cracked. Freed anchor cable and proceeded to base for repairs.

6 May 1944 - Mankel, John George, Cox. left ship for 14 days emergency leave.

8 May 1944 - Gunnery drill against target sleeve towed by Navy plane.

10 May 1944 - Anchor buoy from another ship fouled in rudder. Marshall Toelle, MoMM 1/c volunteered as diver to free rudder.

12 May 1944 - Power steering failed while steaming in training formation. Dropped from formation to repair steering.

17 May 1944 - Beaching exercise. Unable to retract from beach. Attempts of other ships to tow the 750 off the beach resulted in damages and a hawser becoming fouled in the port screw. Freed vessel from beach. Anchored.

18 May 1944 - Underway to repair base using only starboard screw.

25 May 1944 - John S. Wingfield, SC 1/c reported aboard for duty as ship’s cook.

26 May 1944 - Ashton Charamme, F 2/c transferred to Naval Hospital, San Diego with primary syphilitic lesion on penis.

27 May 1944 - Robert O. Bruce, EM 3/c transferred to Naval Hospital, San Diego with recurrence of epyema of the lung. Continued beaching exercises. Gasoline drum swept off fantail by anchor cable fouled screw. Drum recovered by William McMonigle, F 2/c as swimmer.

29 May 1944 - McHugh, John Joseph, SC 3/c transferred to Group LCI (L) 397.

1 June 1944 - Beaching exercises. Pettit, Bobby Lee, EM 3/c and Whitman, Clayton, John, F 2/c. reported aboard for duty. Pettit replaced Bruce, Robert, EM 3/c.

15 June 1944 - Underway for Pearl Harbor, T.H. Div. 45, Group 23, Flotilla 8, 7th Fleet US Navy Amphibious Force

25 June 1944 - Arrived Pearl Harbor. Installed Raytheon SO 8 Radar.

Bobby L. Pettit and Joseph Lowy attended three days of instruction on the SO 8 Radar.

7 July 1944 - Departed Pearl Harbor.

13 July 1944 - Crossed equator. Conducted "Shellback" initiation ceremony for "Pollywogs" complete with haircuts in electric chair and hosing down of Pollywogs.

18 July 1944& - Arrived Funafuti, Ellis Islands.

22 July 1944 - Departed Funafuti.

26 July 1944 - Arrived Espiritu Santo, New Hebrides Islands.

1 August 1944 - Departed Espiritu Santo.

5 Sept. 1944 - Arrived Maffin Bay. Took aboard 176 troops and 7 officers of 31st Div. USA. Practiced beaching. Discharged troops.

10 Sept. 1944 - Beached Maffin Bay. Took aboard 176 troops and 9officers under Mjr. Sandwich. Anchored.

11 Sept. 1944 - Underway in convoy of Task Unit 77.3.1 to landing on Morotai. First major step toward Philippines.

15 Sept. 1944 - Approaching Morotai. Beach under shore bombardment from US and Allied Naval forces. Crew could hear the large projectiles from the Navy’s big guns as the projectiles passed over the 750. Attempted beaching but grounded on reef too far from beach. Retracted and beached 70 yards to starboard of Duroeba Jetty. Discharged troops. General Mac Arthur went ashore next to LCI (L) 750. Retracted from beach. Underway.

16 Sept. 1944 - Arrived Sansapor with 18 LCI’s of Flotilla 8. Anchored.

1 Sept. 1944 - Underway. P-38 fighter crashes 4000 yards ahead of column. Pilot rescued by APD 16.

21 Sept. 1944 - LCI (L) 578 collides with unidentified small craft.

22 Sept. 1944 - Arrived Humboldt Bay, New Guinea. Anchored Jautefa Bay.

30 Sept. 1944 - Underway.

3 Oct. 1944 - Arrived at Cape Sudest. Took aboard troops of 24th Infantry Div. under Capt. Swindell. Underway to Oro Bay. Took on water. Underway. LCI’s had no evaporation system for converting sea water into fresh water. Obtained fresh water from larger ships and ashore. Took salt water showers to conserve fresh water.

6 Oct. 1944 - Arrived Humboldt Bay. Beached at Pie Beach. Discharged troops. Anchored in Jautefa Bay.

30 Oct. 1944 - Took on ammunition.

17 Nov. 1944 - Underway with Task Group 76.6 for Leyte, Philippine Islands.

21 Nov. 1944 - Struck submerged object and jammed starboard screw.

23 Nov 1944 - Port escort vessel fired on enemy planes.

24 Nov. 1944 - Proceeding into Leyte Harbor. General Quarters (GQ). - Condition red. Enemy planes overhead. GQ at 0545, 0735, 1110, 1420, 1705, 1803, 2230. Large portion of Fleet at anchor. Night sky red from tracer; rounds fired at enemy aircraft. Shrapnel from exploding projectiles sprinkling on helmets and deck of the 750.

25 Nov. 1944 - Anchored in San Pedro Bay between Leyte and Samar. GQ at 0530, 1100, 1715, 2030. Japanese planes repeatedly came over the mountains of Samar and dropped down on the fleet undetected. On one occasion our gunners were the first to see an attacking aircraft and opened fire alerting the Fleet. The aircraft flew low over the 750, released its bomb and tried to escape under intense fire. Did not witness the planes fate. Its bomb missed its target. All attacks drew fire from the five 20 MM guns of LCI (L) 750.

26 Nov. 1944 - Underway. Entered San Juanico Strait. Position ship for laying smoke screen. GQ at 1100, 1235, 1345, 1520, 1915, laying smoke. Smoke generator caught fire. Fredrick Beitz received burns.

27 Nov. 1944 - GQ at 0210, 1410, 1030, 1550, 2000, laying smoke.

28 Nov. 1944 - GQ at 0130, laying smoke, 0750, 1110, 1305, 1945, laying smoke.

29 Nov. 1944 - Laying smoke at GQ 0210, 0520, 0730, 1730, 1820, 2305.

30 Nov. 1944 - Laying smoke at GQ 0150,0610, 0815, 2040.

1 Dec. 1944 - Anchored San Pedro Bay, Leyte. GQ 0035, 0040, 0115 laying smoke, 0730, 0847.

2 Dec. 1944 - Laying smoke at GQ 0900, 1455, 1630.

3 Dec. 1944 - GQ laying smoke 0515. Entered floating dry dock USS Carter Hall, LSD 3 to have starboard screw repaired. Do not recall if it was the LSD 3 or another dry dock but a Kamikaze aircraft hit a floating dry dock near the 750 killing several sailors. No mention of this in log.

4 Dec. 1944& - GQ at 0804, 2205 laying smoke.

5 Dec. 1944 - GQ laying smoke 0350, 0400, 2045.

6 Dec. 1944 - GQ 0200 laying smoke, 0215, 0850, 1348, 1616, 1900, 1950, 2310.

7 Dec. 1944 - GQ 0030 making smoke, 0150, 0320, 0947, 1642.

8 Dec. 1944 - Underway to unknown destination at 0530. GQ. Beaching at Tarranguna, Leyte. Took on troops. Underway in Task Unit 78.3.8.

9 Dec. 1944 - In route to Ormoc Bay, Leyte. Power steering failed 0335. Returned to power steering 0345. Landed troops, retracted from beach and underway.

10 Dec. 1944 - Entered port in Dulog area of Leyte. Anchored. Moved to San Pedro Bay. GQ laying smoke.

11 Dec. 1944 - GQ, laying smoke. Captain’s Mass for William Frances McMonigle. Reduced in rating to F 2/c.

12 Dec. 1944 - Laying smoke.

13 Dec. 1944 - Underway departing San Pedro Bay. Beaching at Tarraguna, Leyte. GQ.

14 Dec. 1944 - Took on troops. Underway in convoy. LSM 151 has fire in engine room. Under control. Dropped from convoy.

7 Jan. 1945 - Beached on Samar Island in San Pedro Bay to look for fresh water supply. On at lease one occasion drinking was brown from mud content. Stern anchor fouled by LCI (L) 749.

10 Jan. 1945 - Anchored in Jaunico Strait. Refuge during hurricane. During one storm at sea the main deck cracked allowing water to enter a troop compartment.

18 Jan. 1945 - Cmdr. Houston came aboard in Dulog area of San Pedro Bay.

22 Jan. 1945 - 0145 GQ.

23 Jan. 1945 - John Lawrence Drugan, GM 2/c transferred to the 750 from the USS Blue Ridge, AGC-2 for temporary duty.

26 Jan. 1945 - Moved to Tarraguna Beach. Anchored.

27 Jan. 1945 - Beached Tarraguna Beach. Took aboard 179 troops, 6 officers of the 11th Airborne Infantry, USA, Capt. Malcolm Staford commanding.

28 Jan. 1945 - Underway San Pedro Bay, Leyte to Luzon in Task Unit 78.2.3. 1055 GQ, 1900 GQ.

5 Feb. 1945 - Visited recreation beach for beer and exercise.

13 Feb. 1945 - Took liberty party of DE 589 to White Beach and returned party to DE 589.

28 Feb. 1945 - Beached at Blue Beach to take on troops. 110 men and 6 officers of Company D, 121st Infantry aboard under command of Lt. Warren N. McNamara. Underway in Task Unit 78.9.7. to Lubang Island, PI.

1 March 1945 - Escort vessels began shelling beach. Anchored off Port Tilic, Lubang Island, P.I. Beached and disembarked troops at Port Tilic. Retracted from beach and anchored. Underway to Mindoro.

2 March 1945 - Anchored Mangarin Bay, Mindoro, P.I.

7 March 1945 - Beached at White Beach to take on troops. In route Mangarin Bay to Lubang Island.

8 March 1945 - Beached at Port Tilic, Lubang. Discharged troops. Retrieved troops. Anchored. Underway.

9 March 1945 - Underway to Mangarin Bay, Mindoro. Beached Blue Beach, Mangarin Bay. Disembarked troops. Underway independently to Marindudque Island, PI.

10 March 1945 - Beached Laylay, Marinduque Island. Henry Stewart, StM 3/c went ashore and was brought aboard under arrest on charges of resisting arrest, attempting to strike a superior officer and the usage of abusive, obscene and threatening language to superior officer. Prisoner placed in solitary confinement for safety of ship. Acquired a small dog from island and named him Duke. Underway from Marinduque Island to Tablas Island. Also had a monkey aboard named Jocko.

11 March 1945 - Anchored in Tablas Bay. Rondezvou with convoy. Underway from Tablas Bay to Simara Island, PI. Simara is believed to be Samar)

12 March 1945 - Troops disembark into LCM’s. Underway from Samara to Managarin Bay, Mindoro. Arrived Mangarin Bay. Samara is believed to be Samar) Log does not state where troops came aboard.

13 March 1945 - Beached at Mangarin Bay. Henry Stewart, StM 3/c taken ashore to Naval Base under guard.

15 March 1945 - Proceeded to Blue Beach. Took supplies and rations for transport. Underway to Port Tilic, Lubang.

16 March, 1945 - Arrived Port Tilic. Moored to pier. Brought aboard eight bodies of U.S. Army personnel in wooden boxes for transport to Mindoro for burial. Underway. Odor intense. Encountered rough seas in route to Mindoro. Wooden boxes containing bodies began to break open letting body fluids run onto deck.

17 March, 1945 - Beached at Blue Beach, Mindoro, PI. Army personnel removed bodies and Japanese equipment. Underway. Beached at Mangarin Bay.

19 March, 1945 - Elmer Dale Deardorff, F 1/c received aboard from LCI(L) 960 for permanent duty. Marshall Ford Toelle, CMoMM transferred to LCI (L) 960 for permanent duty.

20 March, 1945 - Underway to White Beach, Mindoro. Took aboard 167 troops and 6 officers of 24th Division of 8th Army. Underway in Task Unit 78.9.7 in route Calapan Bay, Mindoro, PI.

21 March, 1945 - Beached at Takligan, Calapan Bay, Mindoro, PI. Disembarked troops. Underway to Mangarin Bay.

22 March 1945 - Beached at Mangarin Bay, Mindoro. Took on water and anchored at Bubug Point.

28 March, 1945 - Underway in formation from Mangarin Bay to Port Tilic, Lubang.

29 March, 1945 - Arrived Port Tilic. Departed Port Tilic for Blue Beach, Mangarin Bay, Mindoro.

8 April 1945 - Vinis William Gardner, F 1/c transferred to US Army Station Hospital #13, APO #321 for emergency appendectomy.

18 April 1945 - Joseph Lowy, RM2/c; Frederick Beitz, MoM1/c; and John Samuel Wingfield, Chief Cook transferred to NABU-7 for medical treatment.

19 April 1945 - Underway through Illin Straight to Mansalay, Mindoro. Beached to unload provisions. Underway for Mangarin Bay, Mindoro. Beached at Mangarin Bay.

25 April 1945 - Underway for Cape Calavite, Mindoro, PI.

6 May 1945 - Took on supplies and two members of Philippine Army for transport to Calapan, Mindoro. Three more officers and 32 troops of Philippine Army came aboard. Two officers and 7 troops of US Army came aboard for transport.

7 May 1945 - Underway through Illin Straight to Mansalay, Mindoro, PI. Anchored in Mansalay Bay. Underway to Calapan. Moored in Calapan.

19 May 1945 - Took aboard three Japanese prisoners for transport from Romblon to San Jose, Mindoro under guard of Philippine Army Military Police. Philippine civilian aboard 750 attacked Japanese prisoners as they came aboard. Underway to Mangarin Bay, Mindoro. Beached at Mangarin Bay. Three prisoners disembarked under guard of Army Military Police.

20 May 1945 - Army supplies brought aboard.

21 May 1945 - Supplies and 25 Army officers came aboard. Underway to Marinduque, PI. Beached at Marinduque.

22 May 1945 - Underway to Calapan, Mindoro. Moored at wharf at Calapan. Discharged Army personnel.

23 May 1945 - Passengers aboard. Underway for Marinduque. Beached. Passengers disembarked. Underway to Mangarin Bay, Mindoro. Beached at Bubug Point, Mangarin Bay.

4 July 1945 - Underway for compass compensation. Anchored.

6 July 1945 - Numa Dale Mills GM3/c transferred to LCI (L) 750 for duty. John Lawrence Drugan GM2/c transferred to Fleet Gunnery School, Naval Repair Base, San Diego, California.

9 July 1945 - Transferred Ens. Merle Edward Driver to LCI (L) 547 for duty. Ens. Driver was our Mr. Roberts.

10 July 1945 - Departed San Pedro Bay in route Pearl Harbor, TH. with LCI Flotilla 8 Div. 45 under command of Cap. F.O.B. Martin. Drills. Course 092 True. 22 July 1945 - Arrived Eniwetok Atoll. Moored to LCI (L) 749.

23 July 1945 - Took on fuel.

24 July 1945 - Underway to Pearl Harbor, TH.

5 August 1945 - Arrived Pearl Harbor. Moored alongside LCI (L) 753 in Westlock, Pearl Harbor.

6 August 1945 - U.S. dropped atomic bomb on Hiroshima, Japan. No mention of event in ship’s log.

9 August 1945 - U.S. dropped atomic bomb on Nagasaki, Japan. No mention of event in ship’s log.

8 August 1945 - Lt. S.A.R. White, Commanding Officer, detached. Lt.(jg) L.M. Collins assumed command. Underway to San Diego, California.

14 August 1945 - Underway. 1500 Official V-J Day, war with Japan is over. Flotilla fired rockets and lighted ship to celebrate the end of the war.

18 August 1945 - War’s end changed our destination from San Diego to San Pedro, California. Took departure for San Pedro, California as column leader of Div. 45 in company with Groups 23 and 24 of Flotilla 8 under command of C.F. Houston, Lt. Cmdr.

19 August 1945 - Sighted land. Formed single column. Received pilot aboard, proceeding into San Pedro Bay, San Pedro, California. Anchored in San Pedro Bay, NOB Treasure Island. No fanfare.

28 August 1945 - Underway to ammunition dock. All ammunition discharged. Underway to anchorage.

29 August 1945 - The below men departed on leave to expire at 0800, 24 September 1945.

29 October 1945 - 1755. Pettit, Bobby Lee, EM 1/c transferred to Receiving Barracks, Treasure Island, California for further transfer to Camp Wallace, Texas for discharge.
