LST-8 was transferred to the United Kingdom for the duration of World War II
LST-1 Class Tank Landing Ship:
  • Laid down, 26 July 1942, at Dravo Corp., Pittsburgh, PA.
  • Launched, 29 October 1942
  • Transferred to the United Kingdom, 22 March 1943
  • Commissioned into the Royal Navy as HM LST-8, 23 March 1943
  • Sailed from New York for the Mediterranean in convoy UGS8A, 14 May 1943
  • Took part in the invasions of Sicily, Reggio, Salerno, Anzio, Normandy and Malaya
  • At Barry for docking 4 to 6 May 1944
  • At Liverpool for refit in September 1944
  • Paid off (decommissioned) at Subic Bay, Philippines, 4 May 1946
  • Returned to US Naval custody, 1 June 1946
  • Struck from the Naval Register, 3 July 1946
  • Final Disposition: sold, 5 December 1947, to Bosey, Philippines

    Cargo Capacity (varied with mission - payloads between 1600 and 1900 tons)
    Typical loads
    One Landing Craft Tank (LCT), tanks, wheeled and tracked vehicles, artillery, construction equipment and military supplies. A ramp or elevator forward allowed vehicles access to tank deck from main deck
    Additional capacity included sectional pontoons carried on each side of vessel amidships, to either build Rhino Barges or use as causeways. Married to the bow ramp, the causeways would enabled payloads to be delivered ashore from deeper water or where a beachhead would not allow the vessel to be grounded forward after ballasting
