YP-388 Class District Patrol Craft:

  • Built in 1941 as Cohasset by the Bethlehem Shipbuilding Corp., Quincy, MA for R. O'Brien and Company
  • Delivered 9 October 1941
  • Acquired by the Navy 6 February 1942 and designated as a Coastal Minesweeper, AMc-202
  • Reclassified as a District Patrol Craft, YP-389, 1 May 1942
  • Sunk 19 June 1942 approximately 10 miles off Diamond Head, Cape Hatteras, NC by gunfire from the German submarine U-701 at 34° 50' N, 75° 20' W
  • YP-389 could return fire only with her machine guns because the firing pin in the 3"/50 gun was broken
  • She sank after one and a half hours.

    In this composite side-scan sonar image released by the National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), the wreckage of a World War II patrol boat is seen in approximately 300 feet of water off the coast of Cape Hatteras, NC YP-389, a converted trawler used by the Navy for Atlantic coastline protection during World War II, sank June 19, 1942 off North Carolina during a battle with German submarine U-701
