MSC-172 Class Coastal Minesweeper:

  • Originally planned as AMS-189
  • Reclassified by U. S. Navy as a Coastal Minesweeper, MSC-189, 7 February 1955
  • Laid down 18 April 1955 as MSC-189 by Arnhemse scheepsbouw maatschappij, Arnhem, Holland under the off-shore procurement plan of the Military Defense Assistance Pact and based on the design of the British "Ton" Class

  • Launched 31 May 1956
  • Completed 25 November 1956
  • Commissioned Rhenen (M 844), 7 December 1956
  • Converted to a Diving Tender in 1963/1964
  • Underwent Fleet Rehabilitation and Modernization Program (FRAM) in 1973/1974
  • Placed out of service 1 January 1984
  • Struck from the Naval Register in 1986
  • Sold for scrap 12 March 1986 to Hofland of Zeist, Holland for 25,800 Dutch Guilden (11,707 Euros/$11,156).
