Benson Class Destroyer/Ellyson Class Highspeed Minesweeper: Laid down 26 May 1941 at Seattle-Tacoma Shipbuilding Corp., Seattle, WA; Launched 17 March 1942; Commissioned USS Doyle (DD-494), 27 January 1943; Reclassified and converted to a Highspeed Minesweeper, DMS-34, 23 June 1945. The Doyle was used in the filming of the 1954 movie, "The Caine Mutiny." Reclassified back to a Destroyer, DD-494, 15 January 1955; Placed out of commission, in reserve, 19 May 1955 at Orange, TX. Fate unknown.
Specifications: Displacement 1,630 t.(lt), 2,200 t.(fl); Length 347' 10"; Beam 36' 1" ; Draft 15' 8"; Speed 37 kts; Complement 208; Armament four single 5"/38 gun mounts, four 40mm, five 20mm, six dcp, two dct; Propulsion four boilers, two General Electric geared turbines, two shafts.
