Explorer served both the Coast & Geodetic Survey and the U. S. Navy

Patrol Vessel:

  • Built in 1904 as USC&GS Explorer by Pusey and Jones, Wilmington, DE for the Coast and Geodetic Survey
  • Acquired by the Navy 22 May 1918
  • Commissioned USS Explorer 3 June 1918
  • Returned to the Coast and Geodetic Survey 31 March 1919
  • Transferred to the National Youth Authority in 1939
  • Fate unknown.

  • Beam 27'
  • Draft 10'
  • Speed 10 kts.

  • Armament: Two 6-pounders.
