BYMS-44 served the Navies of Great Britain and Finland.

BYMS-1 Class Motor Minesweeper:

  • Laid down 9 April 1942 as BYMS-44 by Gibbs Corp., Jacksonville, FL
  • Launched 19 June 1942
  • Completed 26 November 1942
  • Transferred to Great Britain 29 December 1942 and named HMS J-844
  • Renamed HMS BYMS-2044
  • Sold to Finland as Purunpää 28 February 1948
  • Returned to U.S. custody (on paper only) 19 May 1948
  • Scrapped in 1958.

    Specifications:

  • Displacement 270 t.
  • Length 136'
  • Beam 24' 6"
  • Draft 8'
  • Speed 15 kts.
  • Complement 32
  • Armament: One 3"/50 dual purpose gun mount, two 20mm mounts and two depth charge projectors
  • Propulsion: Two 800bhp General Motors 8-268A diesel engines, Snow and Knobstedt single reduction gear, two shafts.
