BYMS-1 Class Motor Minesweeper:

  • Laid down 8 August 1942 as BYMS-74 by Wheeler Shipbuilding Corp., Whitestone, NY
  • Launched 24 April 1943
  • Completed 8 June 1943, transferred to Great Britain and reclassified J-874
  • Reclassified BYMS-2074
  • Returned to U.S. custody 15 December 1943, loaned to Greece and named Kassos
  • Sunk 15 April 1944 by mine off Piraeus, Greece.


  • Displacement 270 t.
  • Length 136'
  • Beam 24' 6"
  • Draft 8'
  • Speed 15 kts.
  • Complement 32
  • Armament: One 3"/50 dual purpose gun mount, two 20mm mounts and two depth charge tracks
  • Propulsion: Two 880bhp General Motors 8-268A diesel engines, Snow and Knobstedt single reduction gear, two shafts.
