YMS-1 Class Auxiliary Motor Minesweeper:

  • The second Grouse was laid down as YMS-321, 29 August 1942 by the Al Larson Boat Shop Inc., Terminal Island, CA
  • Launched 20 February 1943, sponsored by Mrs. H. Doty
  • Completed and commissioned as USS YMS-321, 25 October 1943
  • Named Grouse and reclassified as a Motor Minesweeper, AMS-15, 18 February 1947
  • Reclassified as a Coastal Minesweeper (Old), MSC(O)-15, 7 February 1955
  • Decommissioned 12 September 1957 and placed in reserve at Portland, ME
  • Placed in service 13 November 1958
  • Ran aground 21 September 1963 at Rockport, MA on the Little Salvages at Latitude 42° 40' 24"N, Longitude 70° 34' 29"W
  • Destroyed by explosives 28 September 1963 and struck from the Naval Register.

    Specifications:

  • Length 136'
  • Beam 24' 6"
  • Draft 8'
  • Speed 13 kts.
  • Complement 50
  • Armament: One 3"/50 dual purpose gun mount, two 20mm mounts and two depth charge projectors
  • Propulsion: Two 880bhp General Motors 8-268A diesel engines, Snow and Knobstedt single reduction gear, two shafts.
