Pelican served the Navies of the United States and Japan

YMS-1 Class Auxiliary Motor Minesweeper:

  • The second Pelican was laid down 27 November 1943 as YMS-441 by Robert Jacob Inc., City Island, NY
  • Launched 13 November 1944
  • Completed 20 February 1945
  • Commissioned USS YMS-441, 21 February 1945
  • Present in Tokyo Bay during Japanese surrender ceremony in September 1945
  • Reclassified as a Motor Minesweeper and named Pelican (AMS 32), 18 February 1947
  • Reclassified as a Coastal Minesweeper (Old), MSC(O)-32, 7 February 1955
  • Decommissioned 16 April 1955, loaned to Japan and renamed Ogishima (MSC 659)
  • Returned to U.S. custody in April 1968
  • Struck from the Naval Register 1 May 1968 and scrapped.

  • Length 136'
  • Beam 24' 6"
  • Draft 8'
  • Speed 15 kts.
  • Complement 32
  • Armament: One 3"/50 dual purpose gun mount, two 20mm mounts and two depth charge projectors
  • Propulsion: Two 880shp General Motors 8-268A diesel engines, Snow and Knobstedt single reduction gear, two shafts.
