PC-546 served the Navies of the United States and France.

PC-461 Class Submarine Chaser:

  • Laid down 9 April 1942 by the Defoe Shipbuilding Corp., Bay City, MI
  • Launched 15 May 1942
  • Commissioned USS PC-546, 8 July 1942
  • PC-546 took part in the following operations:
    Sicilian operation, 9 - 11 July, 28 July - 17 August 1943
    Salerno landings, 9 - 21 September 1943 and,
    Invasion of Southern France, 15 August - 25 September 1944
  • On 16 December 1943 rescued survivors from the U.S. freighter John S. Copley that was torpedoed by the German submarine U-73 off Oran, Algeria
  • Decommissioned 3 October 1944, transferred to France at Toulon, France and named Franc Tireur (W 112)
  • Struck from the Navy Register 17 February 1953 and sunk as a target
  • PC-546 received four battle stars for World War II service.

  • Beam 23'
  • Draft 10' 10"
  • Speed 20.2 kts.
  • Complement 65
  • Armament Two 3"/50 dual purpose gun mounts (Mount 32 replaced by one 40mm gun mount), three 20mm gun mounts, two rocket launchers, four depth charge projectors, and two depth charge tracks
  • Propulsion: Two 2,880bhp General Motors 16-258S diesel engines (Serial No. 6904 and 6905), Farrel-Birmingham single reduction gear, two shafts.
