PC-461 Class Submarine Chaser:

  • Laid down 26 October 1943 at Leathem D. Smith Shipbuilding Corp., Sturgeon Bay, Wisconsin
  • Launched 27 December 1943
  • Commissioned USS PC-822, 2 June 1944 at New Orleans, LA
  • Decommissioned 12 July 1946 at West Palm Beach, Florida and placed in service as a naval reserve training vessel
  • Placed out of service 28 April 1950 at Norfolk, VA and laid up in the Atlantic Reserve Fleet, Norfolk Group
  • Named Asheboro 15 February 1956
  • Struck from the Navy Register 1 April 1959
  • Sold for scrap between 1 October 1959 and 1 January 1960.

    Specifications:

  • Displacement 450 t.
  • Length 173' 8"
  • Beam 23'
  • Draft 10' 10"
  • Speed 19 kts.
  • Complement 65
  • Armament: One 3"/50 dual purpose gun mount, one 40mm gun mount, two 20mm guns, four depth charge projectors, and two depth charge tracks
  • Propulsion: Two 1,280bhp Hooven-Owen-Rentschler R-99DA diesel engines (Serial No. 7321 and 7322), Westinghouse single reduction gear, two shafts.
