PCE(R)-848 Class Patrol Craft Escort (Rescue): Laid down, 6 October 1943 by the Pullman Standard Car Manufacturing Co., Chicago, IL; Launched, 8 February 1944; Commissioned USS PCE(R)-850, 17 April 1944. General MacArthur had directed his chief signal officer, Major General S. B. Akin, to form a fleet command post to facilitate communications during complex land, sea, and air attacks. Most of the ships designated for this duty belonged to the Army. The Navy, realizing that the hospital space on the PCER could easily be converted into a communications center, assigned PCERs 848, 849, and 850 to the operational control of General Headquarters, Southwest Pacific Areas. Work was completed in mid-September 1944; and on 30 September 1944, PCERs 848 and 849 sailed to Hollandia, New Guinea. Named Fairview 15 February 1956; Reclassified as an Experimental Patrol Craft Escort (Rescue), EPCE(R)-850 in 1959; Decommissioned, struck from the Navy Register 1 May 1968 and sold. Fate unknown.
Specifications: Displacement 903 t; Length 184' 6"; Beam 33' 1"; Draft 9' 5"; Speed 15.7k; Complement 99; Armament one 3"/50 dual purpose gun mount, two 40mm gun mounts, two dct, two dcp Propulsion two 1,800 bhp General Motors 12-567A diesel engines, Falk single reduction gear, two shafts.
